Georgia Medicaid Dental Coverage
Updated August 2026
The defining principle of Georgia Medicaid adult dental is pain relief and infection control, not prevention or restoration. A dentist can remove a tooth causing acute pain. They cannot bill Georgia Medicaid to fill a cavity that is asymptomatic — even one that will eventually cause pain if untreated.

Georgia adult Medicaid dental is emergency-only, not a recent cutback
The defining principle of Georgia Medicaid adult dental is pain relief and infection control, not prevention or restoration. A dentist can remove a tooth causing acute pain, but cannot bill Georgia Medicaid to fill a cavity that is asymptomatic. This has long been Georgia policy — it is a common misconception, not an obscure detail.
What Georgia Medicaid covers for adult dental
Services that qualify as emergency dental and are generally covered for adults:
- Emergency dental examinations — required to document the emergency before other services are billed
- Tooth extractions for acute pain or dental infection (abscess)
- Incision and drainage of oral abscesses
- Emergency treatment related to oral trauma
Services not covered for adults under Georgia Medicaid
Each managed care CMO (Amerigroup Community Care, CareSource, and Peach State Health Plan) administers the dental benefit under DCH oversight through the Georgia Families program. Billing rules and prior authorization requirements can differ slightly between plans, so call your CMO's member services line to confirm coverage before your dental visit.

Children under 21 get comprehensive dental — the EPSDT mandate
Federal law at 42 U.S.C. § 1396d(r) requires states to cover all medically necessary dental services for Medicaid enrollees under age 21 through the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit. Georgia must comply regardless of what the state's standard dental benefit list says for adults.
- Preventive cleanings and examinations — typically twice per year
- Dental X-rays at appropriate intervals
- Fluoride treatments and dental sealants
- Fillings and restorations for cavities
- Extractions when clinically necessary
- Emergency dental treatment
- Orthodontic treatment when medically necessary (not cosmetic)
- Oral surgery related to medical necessity

Children enrolled in PeachCare for Kids (Georgia's CHIP program, covering children at 133%–247% FPL) also receive comprehensive dental. The PeachCare dental benefit mirrors the EPSDT standard for enrolled children.
Each CMO maintains a network of participating dentists. Provider availability varies by county — metro Atlanta has more options than rural south Georgia. Start with your CMO's member portal or member services number to search in-network dentists near you.
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) accept Georgia Medicaid and serve patients regardless of ability to pay through a sliding fee scale. Georgia adults who need routine dental care that Medicaid won't cover also have dental school clinics as an option — including the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta — which provide supervised care at reduced fees.
