Adult MassHealth dental benefits

Massachusetts stands out among states for providing meaningful adult dental coverage through MassHealth. Most adult members receive dental benefits that go well beyond emergency-only care — putting Massachusetts in a small group of states with genuinely comprehensive adult Medicaid dental programs.

  • Two preventive exams and cleanings per year
  • Dental X-rays
  • Fluoride treatment
  • Fillings (amalgam and composite)
  • Simple and surgical extractions
  • Root canal treatment on some teeth
  • Dentures (full and partial, when teeth have been extracted)
  • Emergency dental visits
  • Oral surgery when medically necessary

Starting August 1, 2026, dental coverage for MassHealth members 21 and older has a yearly coverage limit of $1,750 — the most MassHealth will pay for covered adult dental care per benefit year. The first benefit year runs from August 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027; afterward, benefit years run July 1 through June 30. This limit does not apply to members younger than 21 or to Department of Developmental Services (DDS) clients. Even after the limit is reached, certain services — including emergency care, tooth extractions, denture repairs, anesthesia, and first full dentures after extractions — may still be covered.

Orthodontic treatment (braces) and dental implants are not covered for adults. Bridges are also not covered. Cosmetic procedures are excluded. Some complex restorative services require prior authorization from DentaQuest or MassHealth.

The specific scope of covered services can vary by MassHealth coverage type. Check your MassHealth coverage type and remaining benefit at (800) 841-2900, the MassHealth Dental Customer Service Center at (866) 616-2699, or at mass.gov/masshealth.

How to find a MassHealth dental provider

DentaQuest manages the MassHealth dental network for most members. Call the MassHealth Dental Customer Service Center at (866) 616-2699 (TTY: 711) or visit masshealth-dental.org and click "Find a Dentist" to locate participating dentists.

FQHCs throughout Massachusetts also accept MassHealth for dental services. Boston, Springfield, Worcester, and other cities with large underserved populations have multiple community health centers with dental departments. Use the HRSA Health Center Finder at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov to locate one near you.

If you cannot find a MassHealth dental provider accepting new pediatric patients, contact the MassHealth Dental Director's office through MassHealth Member Services at (800) 841-2900. Massachusetts has specific access standards for pediatric dental services that plans are required to meet.
